SEO and GEO – What’s the Difference and Do You Need Both?

Two acronyms SEO and GEO, one honest explanation

If you have started seeing the terms SEO and GEO pop up and felt a bit lost and confused, you are not alone. Marketing loves a new acronym, and it is easy to feel like you need a degree in tech to keep up. So let’s clear this one up once and for all with no jargon or overselling. Here’s a straightforward explanation of what SEO and GEO actually are, and whether your business genuinely needs both. Because at YostratO, we believe in explaining things in plain English. You shouldn’t need to be a techy to understand what is happening with your own website.

What is SEO – really?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. In simple terms, it is everything you do to help your website show up when someone searches for something on Google.

Think of it like this: when someone searches “plumber in Aylesbury,” Google is trying to work out which websites are the most relevant, trustworthy and useful answer to that search. SEO is the process of making sure your website ticks those boxes, through things like having the right words on your pages, a website that loads quickly, and other websites linking back to you because they trust what you do.

SEO has been around for decades, and it is still the foundation of how most people find businesses online today.

So then what Is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation, and it is a newer concept that has come about because of how people are starting to search differently. The term was first coined in a research paper by Princeton, Georgia Tech and other universities, who studied how content can be optimised to appear in AI-generated answers rather than traditional search listings.

Instead of typing a search into Google and scrolling through a list of links, more people are now asking questions directly to AI tools, things like ChatGPT, or Google’s AI Overviews that appear at the top of search results. Rather than giving you ten links to click through, these tools generate a single, summarised answer.

GEO is about making sure your business gets mentioned in that answer. If someone asks an AI tool to recommend a good accountant in Buckinghamshire, GEO is what helps your business be one of the names it suggests.

How SEO and GEO actually different?

The simplest way to think about SEO and GEO is this: SEO helps you show up in a list of links. GEO helps you get mentioned directly inside an AI generated answer.

They are not competing with each other; they are actually solving slightly different problems. SEO is still about being visible when someone clicks through a traditional search. GEO is about being visible when someone doesn’t click through at all, because the AI tool has already given them an answer.

The good news is that the two overlap more than you might expect. A website that is well structured, genuinely useful and clearly written tends to perform better for both.

Do you actually need both?

Here is where we will be straight down the line with you, because that is what we promise our clients. Not every business needs to be chasing GEO right now with the same urgency as SEO.

If you run a local business and most of your customers still find you through a Google search or a recommendation, solid SEO remains the priority. It is the proven, reliable way most people are still finding businesses like yours.

On saying that, AI search is growing quickly, and ignoring it completely is not a sensible long-term plan either. The businesses that will benefit most from GEO are typically those competing in busier markets, or those who want to stay ahead of where search behaviour is heading over the next few years.

For most small and medium businesses, a strong SEO foundation should come first, with GEO built on top of it as search habits continue to shift. Trying to chase GEO before your basic SEO is solid is a bit like decorating a house before you have laid the foundations.

How to decide if SEO and GEO are right for you

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on your business, your customers and how they are searching for you right now. That is exactly the kind of conversation worth having before spending money on either.
