What is a website backup and how often should it be done?

A website backup is a complete copy of all website files and the database, stored securely in a separate location from the live server. Backups should be taken daily for active websites and weekly at minimum for static sites, with copies retained for at least 30 days. Regular backup verification — confirming that backups can actually be restored — is as important as the backups themselves.
